SOP vs. Protocol: What’s the difference?

In agriculture, and probably other industries, the terms “Standard Operating Procedures” (SOPs) and “Protocols” are often used interchangeably.

Many times, we get asked what’s the difference, and does it really matter. In the day-to-day dialog, it probably doesn’t matter too much what word you use.

The important thing is that all your processes are documented, and your employees are trained and compliant.

However, understanding the distinction between these two can help you organize your work and training of your farm operation.

What are Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)?
